Neurovascular intervention is a specialized field of Neurosciences in which Neurological disorders ( Stroke, Aneurysms) are treated from within the blood vessels or endovascularly.
This approach is less invasive, relatively safer and offers new hope to patients who had been told previously that they had no further treatment option.
SCOPE OF NEUROVASCULAR INTERVENTION IN VARIOUS NEUROLOGIAL CONDITIONS:
• SAH and Intracranial Aneurysms: Subarachnoid Hemorrhage due to rupture of Intracranial Aneurysm is a devastating disease due to high mortality and morbidity. Today, Endovascular treatment of ruptured Aneurysm by coiling and other techniques is the preferred method over surgical clipping. Nowadays even large sized, complex Aneurysms can be successfully treated with stent like devices known as Flow Diverters.
• Acute Ischemic Stroke: Stroke is a major health burden globally. Infact it is the third leading cause of death and the most common cause of disability worldwide. Till now the only treatment which existed to open up the clogged arteries was the clot busting drug TPA. However with the advent of Endovascular Techniques such as Mechanical Thrombectomy, Clot suction devices and Intra arterial Thrombolysis the outcome of patients reaching within the window period (<6 hours) has improved dramatically.
• Stroke Prevention: Around 15% if all ischemic strokes are due to carotid stenosis. Endovascular approach (carotid stenting) is now an excellent alternative to carotid endarterectomy. It is less invasive, can be done in local anesthesia and considerably reduces the hospital stay. Vertebral artery stenting can be useful in carefully selected of vertebral stenosis.
• AVM 4 Dural AVF: Intracranial hemorrhage due to ruptured AVM or a Dural AVF us a complex condition to treat. In carefully selected patients, onyx embolization of AVM or Dural AVF can result in favourable clinical outcome.
